THE PROBLEM: *Michigan nursery, perennial plant production, Christmas tree, sod producers, landscaping and lawn care industries contribute $1.2 billion to Michigan’s economy.

A massive beautification effort which results in 350 million pounds of garden plastic waste.  Specifically annual and perennial containers, trays, annual flower cells and all the greenhouse plastic.  Hmm?

Introducing Peace, Love & Planet and your conscience.  Together we can recycle your plastic and promote sustainability in our community!

Recycle Etiquette 2010

1. Recycle responsibly.

2. Bang out dirt

3. Remove any metal tag         with pliers.

Unfortunately the only two municipalities that recycle #5 and #6 plastics are SOCCRA in Troy, MI or Great Lakes Recycling (east side and Canton).  The Recycle Authority (RRRASOC) in Southfield only recycles plastic BOTTLES, NOT CONTAINERS marked with the #’s 5, 6, 7 such as yogurt, sour cream, butter and ricotta cheese.  Even though your recycler my collect these types of plastic, it gets sorted and  thrown into the trash. Just remember, a triangle does not mean it is recyclable.  There are numerous reasons for your local recycling facility to not recycle specific items. Primarily it’s not cost effective and often more expensive to recycle verses throw it into a landfill.

REUSE or RETURN.
Always offer your garden plastic back to the farmer. Often they will reuse their own pots. It varies farmer to farmer and their concern for contamination. Check Calendar for Farmers Market recycling schedule.
Farmers Markets:
New this year the addition of Ann Arbor and Canton farmers markets. Of course you can recycle at either Northville every Thursday or Farmington market. Check Calendar for schedule and new drop off sites.

A wholesale plant center in Plymouth, MI will be collecting and consolidating plastic flower pots for free. This year landscapers and nurseries will enjoy the benefits recycling and save on expensive waste removal services while saving the planet. We request participating stores and markets follow guidelines detailed in the attached Recycle Program PDF. The significant benefit for landscapers is the reduction in garbage dump fees while making a positive impact on our planet.Calendar.htmlCalendar.htmlCalendar.htmlshapeimage_10_link_0shapeimage_10_link_1shapeimage_10_link_2
